Extreme Noise Terror: Law of retaliation

21/01/09  ||  Euthanatos

19 songs of buttfuckingly brutal grind crust. That’s “Law of Retaliation”, the new album from English legends Extreme Noise Terror. I think it has been something like 7 or 8 years since the last I heard of ENT, and boy have they been missed. No one provides such a destructive assault on the ear drums quite like these fellas. Everything is so fucking desperate and fast, you can’t help being overwhelmed by it all. Don’t you even try to bang your head to the tempo or you’ll bleed your brain out of your nose, I assure you.

It’s most gratifying to see that ENT have come back better than ever; nothing has been lost or left on the way, things have only been gained. Everything sounds better, faster, angrier, madder, fuller. I love the production, and the vocals are so in-your-face it feels like a punch in the anus. Dean Jones and Phil Vane must have spent the last few years either in Iraq or Guantanamo. They fucking sound pissed.

Most songs are just under 2 minutes, the few that go beyond it do so for only a few seconds. That keeps things concise, an apocalyptic heap of fury and mayhem, all neatly packaged for your listening delight. The only moments for a breather are when the band inserts little movie snippets. Other than that, ENT constantly stray away from their crust roots, reaching towards grindcore with each passing moment. While not as magnanimous as “Holocaust in your head”, “Law of Retaliation” is much better than “Being and Nothing”. so that alone should make you listen to this.

As the world is corrupted and crumbles before failed financial institutions, greed and the putrid feces that is humankind, Extreme Noise Terror thrash us with the only good kind of terrorism; the sonic one.

The cover: It’s alright, a little disturbing, but could have been done a bit more professionally.

7 dogs eating your face while you scream out of 10.
